Kentucky police officer shot dead on way home from work

A uniformed police officer was shot and killed early Saturday morning while driving home from work on a highway in the U.S. state of Kentucky, state police said. There were no witnesses to the shooting and no arrests were immediately made.
The incident was first reported at approximately 2:53 a.m. local time on Saturday when Post 4 of the Kentucky State Police received a 911 call of a fatality crash involving a Bardstown Police cruiser on the 34 exit ramp of Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County. The first officer arrived at the scene at 3:16 a.m. local time. "Minutes after our Trooper`s arrival he discovered that it was not a motor vehicle crash and that the officer involved had been shot and killed," said state police spokesman Norman Chaffins. "The Bardstown Officer was in uniform in his cruiser and on his way home from work." It is believed there were no witnesses to the shooting and no arrests were immediately made.
